I gave away my wedding ring to Oxfam - Tessa Cunningham

This year, I celebrated the New Year by doing something totally unexpected. It was a gesture so empowering and so completely out of character that I feel a swell of pride just thinking about it.
No, I didn’t go bungee jumping, hot air ballooning or rock climbing. I didn’t go gorilla spotting in Africa or deep-sea diving in the Seychelles. But what I did was - for me - equally outlandish and every bit as exhilarating.
I bought myself a piece of jewellery. Not any old piece of jewellery. I bought myself a ring. A stonking great green quartz which now flashes on the third finger of my left hand.
It’s the first time I’ve ever bought something to put on any finger — let alone ‘that’ finger, the one reserved for wedding rings. And it was only as I slipped the ring on in the jewellery department of Liberty in London that I realised the full significance of what I was doing.
I was celebrating a brand new year - and a brand new me. And now every time I look at the huge rock sparkling on my finger I get a surge of excitement.
I have always adored jewellery - and rings in particular. But, like most women, I was conditioned to believe that the one item of jewellery a woman never buys herself is a ring.
In fact, every ring I have worn over the years has been bought for me by a man. And every one has meant something very special - at the time.
When I got engaged to my first husband in 1985, we had so little money we scoured second-hand shops.
The ring I chose was an art deco design - a teeny emerald nestling between two diamond chips. It cost £82. Cheap and unflashy, maybe, but it sealed the biggest commitment of my life.
Five years later, we were on our honeymoon in India and he bought me the most exquisite sapphire ring. Flashing off my new status as a married woman, it heralded the start of a thrilling future.
But, although I loved wearing it, I kept a soft spot for that tiny little engagement ring which had begun the whole story.
When our first daughter, Ellen, was born in August 1991, my husband did a victory run around the labour room and then delved into his pocket to find the ring he had bought me to celebrate - a delicately carved Victorian one mounted with five diamonds. Even the midwife went misty-eyed.
In the months that followed, as I staggered bleary-eyed from our bed to feed her, I’d sometimes slip on the ring, look at those diamonds - worth a cool £900 - and feel a surge of utter contentment. A husband, a daughter, a diamond ring. What more could any woman want?
When Elise was born, 17 months later, my husband marked the event with a ruby ring.
I’d look at my rings — one on each hand — and imagine the moment, long in the future, when I’d hand them down. One for each of my beautiful daughters.
But it wasn’t to be. My marriage was already buckling — not helped by the pressure of two children born in such quick succession.
And that’s when I discovered the sad truth. When love dies, jewellery instantly loses its sparkle. I didn’t want to wear them. I didn’t want to look at them. They were reminders of all the dashed hopes and empty dreams.
It’s a dilemma facing most women who divorce. Some choose to carry on wearing their rings — particularly if they have young children, because they don’t want the outside world to know they are no longer part of a happy couple and family.
But not me. I didn’t even want them in the house. I auctioned them all for a fraction of their worth.
One friend got great pleasure putting her engagement ring on eBay. Getting a good price was the last thing on her mind. Just as well, since she advertised it with the ‘ringing’ endorsement: ‘Might suit vile love rat.’
I didn’t get any joy from selling my rings: in fact, it took me weeks to cash the cheques. And when I finally did, I felt physically sick.
But did that stop me still lusting after jewellery? Not a bit of it. I was mesmerised by other women’s engagement and eternity rings. My ringless fingers were a constant reminder of my broken marriage.
When I fell in love with my second husband, Richard, I was giddy with joy when he presented me with a diamond, gipsy-style ring to mark the anniversary of our first date. He whisked it out of his pocket at our favourite restaurant. I was so stunned, I burst into noisy tears.
When we got engaged a few months later, Richard suggested buying an engagement ring. But I loved that unassuming little ring so much, I refused. Like first love, it had meant so much I couldn’t bear to reject it now.
However, as the years passed, I did begin to covet something slightly more substantial. I’d stand outside jeweller’s windows, ogling eternity rings.
But I did it secretly. Richard had quit his well-paid job as a ship broker in the City soon after we married. His new job as a gardener paid barely enough to keep him in winter socks, let alone me in diamonds. Buying my own jewels would have seemed like the final insult.
And then came our tenth wedding anniversary — the perfect occasion for an eternity ring.
I tried not to feel sad when, instead, Richard presented me with a bunch of sunflowers.
But it was a clarion call that all wasn’t well. And sure enough, our marriage ended 11 months later, in 2008.
And, as I took that very first little diamond ring Richard had given me to my local Oxfam shop, I was, once again, gripped by sadness.
Of course, there have been moments when I’ve regretted disposing of my jewels so dramatically. Even though I couldn’t bear to wear them myself, I could have passed them down to my daughters.
But to me they were so tainted, I feared they would bring ill luck.
Then, just after Christmas, I was shopping with my daughters for an 18th birthday present. Elise wanted something substantial; a ring.
Watching my gorgeous daughter try on jewellery, I realised that rings can tell a happy story. The love between a mother and a daughter: a love that lasts for ever.
As we browsed the counter of designer Dinny Hall, something large and sparkly caught my eye.
Egged on by my girls, I slipped it on my wedding finger — the only one it would fit on. It looked so right.
And I realised why. My ring symbolises the start of a new independent life, circled by those I love.

Vanilla Ice says he broke up with Madonna over her 'Sex' book

Infamous rapper-turned-reality-star Vanilla Ice has revealed that he broke up with Madonna over her explicit 'Sex̢۪ book.

The pair split in 1992 after an eight-month relationship, reports Digital Spy.

"I broke up with her after she printed [the explicit book, 'Sex'] because I was hurt to be an unwitting part of this slutty package," the 43-year-old told News of the World.

Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, appeared in the 1992 book in a sexually suggestive position with a fully nude Madonna, but admitted to the U.K. paper that he found it "disgusting and cheap."

"We were in a relationship, yet it looked like she was screwing all these other people," the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

"I thought she was taking pictures and running round naked because she was like that. Then when the book came out I was so embarrassed and ashamed. It was a porno."

Madonna, 52, "threw me in like I was a product off a shelf, and I didn''t appreciate it," he said.

"That was it and I ended it," the musician recalled.

"She said she didn't have sex with these men, but it looked like she was," he added.

Natalie Portman's new role will empower women sexually: Ashton Kutcher

Ashton Kutcher thinks that his co-star Natalie Portman's role in their new romcom 'No Strings Attached' will inspire young women to be "empowered" by their sexuality.

In the film, Portman play a woman who attempts to have a sexual relationship with a male friend, acted by Kutcher, without developing any emotional attachment to him.

The 'Dude' actor insists the movie sends a "powerful" message to females about having a healthy sex life.

"For women in the sex education process in schools, the one thing they teach about is how to get pregnant or how to not get pregnant, but they don't really talk about sex as a point of pleasure for women," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Kutcher as telling Movieline.com.

"Part of that creates a place where women aren't empowered around their own sexuality and their own sexual selves, and from a purely entertainment point of view, to create a movie with a female lead that's empowered with her own sexuality is a powerful thing.

"And if we can give teenage people something to think about from a sex perspective, I would say it would be to open a conversation where women are empowered with their own sexual experiences from an educational level as well as an entertainment level," the actor said.

The film is due for release in the US on January 21

Jet Li's One Foundation turns into independent public fund-raising organization

The One Foundation, begun by Kung Fu star Jet Li, has ended its cooperation with the Red Cross Society of China and announced the establishment of an independent public fund-raising foundation here on Tuesday.
This is the first case that a non-governmental foundation affiliated with a government-run organization has successfully been transformed into a public fund-raising organization.
Experts say this is a great step forward in China's social organizations management system reform and shows the support of the Chinese government in the development of NGOs.
The Jet Li One Foundation had been operating as a special program under the Red Cross Society of China, since China does not have laws or regulations which allow the establishment of non-governmental public fund-raising foundations.
Wang Rupeng, spokesman for the Red Cross Society of China, says the One Foundation, under his organization, raised more than 190 million yuan (nearly 29 million U.S. dollars) in the past three years and distributed some 140 million yuan to different philanthropic projects.
Actually, many individuals or NGOs choose to cooperate with foundations or organizations run, or partly run, by the government, in order to receive permission to raise money from the public. For example, more than 40 "foundations" are currently under the organizational umbrella of the Chinese Red Cross Foundation.
However, Jet Li complained that the One Foundation had little say in deciding on the use of money it had raised. According to his plan, his foundation sought to focus more on supporting domestic grass-roots NGOs, which lack both money and professionals, while the Red Cross Society of China is an organization paying more attention to disaster relief.
Li has been trying hard to apply to establish an independent public-raising foundation.
And this is a common problem faced by Chinese NGOs when establishing public fund-raising foundations. Further, a lack of transparency by NGOs is another concern of the government.
In recent years, especially after the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, Chinese NGOs have been developing rapidly, in terms of both quantity and quality, according to Wang Zhenyao, director of the Beijing Normal University One Foundation Philanthropy Research Institute.
The government has seen this development and has started to encourage the expansion of NGOs, says Wang Zhenyao, who is also a retired official from the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
China started a trial project in Shenzhen, China's first special economic zone, to advance the reform of the civil affairs system in July 2009, which allowed the city's authorities to approve the creation of public fund-raising foundations. In the past, only the Ministry of Civil Affairs had this authority.
Liu Runhua, director of the Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau, says they invited the One Foundation to register in Shenzhen while knowing the obstacles it has been confronted by.
Finally, the Shenzhen One Foundation successfully registered on Dec. 3, 2010.
Besides Jet Li, most of the 11 members on the council of the Shenzhen One Foundation are top Chinese entrepreneurs, including Tencent CEO Ma Huateng and Alibaba Group CEO Ma Yun. Economist Zhou Qiren was selected as director of the council and Vanke Chairman Wang Shi is acting as the executive director.
Wang Rupeng says, at the request by One Foundation, the Red Cross Society of China will audit One Foundation's financial records and the rest of the fund and ongoing projects will be transferred to the Shenzhen One Foundation.
Wang Shi noted that the newly established foundation will continue its original projects, including philanthropic funding to grass-roots NGOs, training professionals and assisting with disaster relief.
It will also develop new projects according to the demands of the public.
"A development strategy in the upcoming three years will be discussed at the next council meeting, which will be held no later than early March," said Wang Shi during an exclusive interview with Xinhua.
Wang Zhenyao says the establishment of the Shenzhen One Foundation is a milestone for the development of China's NGOs.
"It is a breakthrough in the system and can be copied by other organizations," Wang Zhenyao says.
Ma Hong, director of the Shenzhen NGO administration bureau, says the door to registering public fund-raising foundations is now open to all NGOs.
However, it does not mean many of them will be approved in the short term, she says.
"We have to evaluate them properly and make approvals when they meet the standards," Ma says, adding that credibility and transparency are critical for the development of NGOs.
Wang Shi says the successful experience of the establishment of the Shenzhen One Foundation includes transparency, professionalism and following rules and regulations.
"Other NGOs may learn from it," he says.

Says a source close to Hrithik, "Ever year on this day, he calls up one person that he has hurt in the past year, intentionally or unintentionally, and says sorry. Gulshan Grover is jealous of Anil Kapoor

Barely a few months ago Gulshan Grover was bragging about his jealous B-Town friends wanting to kill him after he signed Bill Duke's The Driver opposite Salma Hayek.

But the tables have turned now. Grover's enthusiastic comments about the project have now landed him in a soup.

Grover had gone all out to the media about starring with Salma Hayek in this film. Now, the producers of the film are very upset with him for letting out so much information about the film.

So, they called him recently to express their discomfort. Gulshan will now have to fly to LA to meet them and give an explanation for this.

It turns out that professional jealousy prompted Grover to take this step. He was upset about Anil Kapoor becoming the centre of attention for signing Mission Impossible. Our source says, "Grover felt left out as he was one of the first Bollywood actors to have made a mark in Hollywood. So, the moment Grover signed The Driver with Bill Duke he started giving interviews in the media talking about the film."

Now, the actor is paying for being the 'bad man'. When contacted, Gulshan Grover said, "All I can say is that I now know the power of Indian media. I never thought that what I was saying to the media here would reach there in such a big way. I said all this because suddenly my friend Anil was all over the place for Mission Impossible.

I was feeling a little left out and that's why I did it. The producers called me up; they were a little upset. I guess I jumped the gun and gave out too many details.

I realise that now and I am going to LA to explain to them what happened. However, I am glad that Anil and I are flying the Indian flag internationally." Heard of Mallika Sherawat, Mr Grover?

Sir Elton John's fathering of a surrogate child by an American woman raises concerns, says the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester.
Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John is only 15 days old, but he has already provoked a pronouncement from one of the Church of England's most prominent prelates.

Sir Elton John's fathering of a son by an American surrogate mother with his civil partner, David Furnish, risks causing the child lasting psychological damage, claims the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester.

"I believe that surrogacy, inevitably, introduces a 'third' party to the legal parents," he tells Mandrake. "This will affect the welfare of the child, psychologically and in other ways."

The Rt Rev Nazir-Ali also draws attention to the age of Sir Elton, who turns 64 in March. "It is very important for a child's parents to be of an age that provides the child with a fair chance of being brought up by them without unnecessary disruption," he says.

"Although society must support single parents who, heroically, bring up children on their own, all the evidence shows that children are best brought up in the context of a stable marriage where they can relate to a mother and a father, so that they can develop healthy relationships with people of both genders."

Daniel Craig's friend Rachel Weisz finds that home is where the heart is

Rachel Weisz, the New York-based actress, says she misses London, where her Christmas companion, the James Bond star Daniel Craig, has also lived.
Rachel Weisz pledged to continue to bring up her four-year-old son, Henry, in New York when she announced in November that she had split up with Darren Aronofsky, the American film director.

The Oscar-winning star of The Constant Gardener yearns, however, to return to Britain, where she spent Christmas in a West Country cottage with Daniel Craig, who plays James Bond.

"I miss home so much," admits Weisz, 40, who attended St Paul's Girls' School in Hammersmith. "Not only my family, but my friends. Also, London itself.

"I was in London for a long season doing theatre and I was delighted to get to know its parks again and the little shops that are full of charm, and that calmer way of dealing with people."

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham expecting fourth baby

David and Victoria Beckham are expecting their fourth child in the summer.
The couple's three sons - Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, 8, and Cruz, 5 - were said to be "very excited" about having a new brother or sister.

Jo Milloy, spokeswoman for Mrs Beckham, confirmed the baby news but declined to give a more specific due date or confirm how far the pregnancy was advanced.

The announcement was made after weeks of speculation that the Beckhams may soon return to the UK.

Former England captain David, 35, was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur but manager Harry Redknapp admitted today the deal "looked like a no-goer".

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Redknapp said: "David is welcome to come and train here for a month or so which I think he would like to do but it looks like, as far as playing goes, it looks like a no-goer."
The Beckhams were tonight in the UK, where they are expected to stay until February when David returns to LA Galaxy and Victoria, 36, attends the New York Fashion Week.

The spokeswoman said both their families were "naturally delighted" with the announcement of a fourth child.

A message on David Beckham's Facebook page said: "I've got some great news to tell you all. Victoria and I are expecting our fourth child this summer. The boys are very excited about the arrival of a new brother or sister."

Amanda Holden, who recently announced her own pregnancy, took to her Twitter page to congratulate the couple and wrote: "Great News that the Beckham's are expecting their 4th child! Hope they get a pink one!"

Tottenham announced that Beckham will arrive at Spurs Lodge, their training ground, in Essex, tomorrow to meet with medical staff, before returning on Tuesday to train with the first team.

The club said he will train with the squad until February 10.

Harry Redknapp tonight appeared to backtrack on his previous statement, and insisted Tottenham have not completely given up hope of signing the star on load.

Following the Lilywhites' 3-0 win over London rivals Charlton in the FA Cup, Redknapp was asked if a deal could still happen.

He said: "I don't honestly know. That's being done above my head. Hopefully it could still happen. The situation is ongoing."

Aishwarya Rai replaced by Freida Pinto as face of L'Oreal'

Aishwarya Rai, the Hollywood and Bollywood film star widely regarded the 'world's most beautiful woman,' has been ousted as the Indian face of cosmetic giant L'Oreal by Freida Pinto, according to industry insiders.
Her omission from L'Oreal's 'Happy New Year 2011' campaign marks the end of her reign as the world's best recognised Indian face, commentators said, and her demise as the country's most successful international film star.

It also marks the rise of Ms Pinto, who was relatively unknown until her appearance in Slumdog Millionaire, as one of India's top global stars.

The replacement of Ms Rai in L'Oreal's 'Happy New Year' campaign caps a miserable few months for a woman still regarded as a classical Indian beauty. Newspaper columnists have criticised her for appearing to have put on weight, while her appearance on the cover of the Indian edition of Elle magazine sparked a controversy over her skin colour.

It was claimed the photographs had been altered to make Ms Rai appear white.

Bollywood commentator and editor of The Hindustan Times' Brunch magazine Poonam Saxena said there was a growing perception in India that Ms Rai's reign was now over.
