Kidman nominated at Spirit Awards

Nicole Kidman has started the Hollywood awards season strongly, with the Australian actress nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

Kidman has been recognised in the best actress category for her role in the drama, Rabbit Hole.

Along with Kidman, nominations went to Annette Bening, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Greta Gerwig and Michelle Williams.
The category has six nominees instead of the usual five.

Rural crime thriller Winter's Bone earned a leading seven nominations, including best picture and acting honours for Lawrence, John Hawkes and Dale Dickey.

It also picked up a directing nomination for Debra Granik, a screenplay honour for Granik and co-writer Anne Rosellini and a cinematography nomination.

Also nominated for the best picture are James Franco's survival tale, 127 Hours, Portman's ballet drama, Black Swan, Ben Stiller's dark romance, Greenberg, and Bening's lesbian family drama, The Kids Are All Right.

Besides Franco and Stiller, best actor nominees are Ronald Bronstein for Daddy Longlegs, Aaron Eckhart for Rabbit Hole and John C Reilly for romantic comedy Cyrus.

Along with Granik, the best director field includes 127 Hours filmmaker Danny Boyle, Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, Lisa Cholodenko for The Kids Are All Right and John Cameron Mitchell for Rabbit Hole.

The awards will be handed out on February 26, a day before the Oscars.

Recent Spirit winners, such as Precious, The Wrestler and Juno, have been major award season contenders.
